How to Make a Homemade Punching Bag

If you like fighting sports, chances are you love boxing. The problem with practicing it is that you have to go to a gym and hope that there is a punching bag in it. If you have space in your house you could buy one, but here comes the second problem, and that is that they are not cheap. So the solution is for you to learn how to make a homemade punching bag. You can train whenever you want, without leaving home and for very little money.

There are several ways to make a punching bag and it is not very complicated, although it also depends on the strap you are going to put in it. If you are going to do it to learn and at a more amateur pace, it is not necessary to complicate your life too much, however if you want to train in a more professional way, it is better that you level up so that the punching bag lasts longer..

Here are some guidelines on how to make a homemade punching bag to release tension.

Instructions to make a homemade punching bag

  1. First of all you have to get the cover of the bag and there are several materials, although what you can do is use an army backpack. Its shape is similar to that of punching bags so it will be easier for you.
  2. You have to be clear about the measurements you want. You can take the size of the bags that are 100×35 as a reference to get an idea.
  3. You need to fill the bag, so buy kilos of sand or sawdust. The ideal weight would be about 23 kilos, if it is for beginners it should not exceed 30 and if it is for professional training you can add more weight. Put the stuffing in bags, so that in the event that the cover bursts from a punch or kick, the stuffing doesn’t come out, it’s just visible in the bags you’re putting it in.
  4. Inside the cover you must put the bags with the filling in a way that you should not have gaps in between, if this is the case, you can put sand in smaller bags to fill. If there are gaps, the problem is that balloons will be created and when you hit the box there will be nothing to resist you. Also, to fill those gaps, you can use old clothes; rags… try to make everything compact without any loose area.
  5. When you have well attached the filling inside the cover, close it at the top. The safest thing is to make a large knot and close it with a cable tie or some other closure that cannot be opened. In the event that the bag falls, if it is not well closed, the interior can come out, so make sure that the closure is good.
  6. Now you must hang the bag from a surface to start boxing. The ideal is that you take chains, which have a great resistance, and you have to take into account the length at which the bag will be. Hang it from the ceiling with some support or even with a pull-up bar on the ceiling, hang it from it. To hook it buys ceiling hooks.
  7. Now you can start training with your bag and get the most out of it.

This is not the only way to make a punching bag. There would be another even simpler:

  1. Take several tires that you are not going to use; it would be nice if they were not very deflated, although they could also be worth it. Stack them on top of each other until you get the height you want, about 5 or 6 tires would be perfect
  2. Tie the tires together on the sides with a rope so they don’t move. And give it several turns, but always on the same side so that the rope is only on two sides, until you notice that it is fixed. Keep in mind that you are going to punch some tires that are held by the rope, if the rope is not well fixed as soon as you give a strong blow, some of the tires may fall, so it is better to give it several laps.
  3. Now with some links, put some chains on each side of the tires where you have passed the rope and hook it to a fixed surface. Take into account the length of the chains, depending on where you are going to place it.
  4. Once this is done and you are sure that it is fixed and will not fail, you already have your punching bag to start training.

But if what you want is a very professional bag, you also have a third option:

  1. Buy a PVC pipe and cut it to 91 centimeters. Then pierce the tube with two holes, one on each side. The base will go at one end and the bag at the other.
  2. Now you have to create the base of the bag. Do this with a piece of wood or a plywood board and use a compass to make the circle perfect.
  3. Place the cut piece, which will be 10 centimeters, inside one of the ends of the tube, to act as a stop.
  4. Cut another piece, now 25 centimeters, at the same end where you have placed the 10 and with a drill make four holes and put the screws so that both pieces are joined.
  5. Now you have to worry about the soft part, so take a rug and cut it to the same length as the tube, 91 centimeters, or even a little more in case you fall short. And wrap the PVC pipe in the carpet. And make sure it is well secured so that it does not move when you hit it.
  6. Cover the mat with adhesive tape and do it over the entire surface and several times so that everything is well attached, but the upper part must be left uncovered because it is the space that we will use to hang the bag and if we cover it we will not be able to do it.
  7. Through the two holes you made at the ends at the beginning, pass a rope. Note that both ends are the same length, because it is where you are going to hang the bag and if they do not measure the same, the side will be unbalanced towards one of the sides.
  8. Now that you have the rope, you just have to put it on a hanging surface to hit it. Of course, make it as safe as possible so that it does not fall.
  9. You already have your bag ready to start hitting.

And there is also a fourth way, if instead of having the bag hanging from the ceiling you want it on the ground. Because you will not always have a surface to hang it on and it may be safer. Of course, it is a more difficult process because you have to use cement:

  1. Take three wooden boards that will make the mast, so stick them well with glue so they don’t move. He uses nails on the bottom of the boards so that the boards adhere better to each other.
  2. Now you need to create a base with a piece of plywood to put on top of the mast you have made. The size does not matter as much as its resistance, which must support the weight of the three boards.
  3. Wait a few hours, even a day so that everything is well glued: the boards that make the mast to each other and these to the wooden base.
  4. When everything is fixed, there is the most complicated step. You are going to make the base with two tires, so place them well one on top of the other.
  5. You must make a mixture to get cement, with two bags it will be enough, when you have the mixture made, pour it into the gap between the two tires so that they are well fixed. Of course, do not forget to first put the base of wood inside the hole of the tires. In this way everything will be well fixed so that you can hit it.
  6. You must wait two or three days before continuing so that the cement dries perfectly. If you touch it before time, the base may not have stuck well and the homemade bag will not work.
  7. Using an old mat or similar material, cut it to the size of the pole. You’ll need to place it around this so that the surface you’re going to hit is soft, so you can use something else that isn’t a mat but is just as versatile.
  8. When you paste it, you should cover everything with adhesive tape so that it does not come off and to continue making the surface softer.
  9. Finally put a foam pad under the tires, so that when you hit the bag does not fail.
  10. You already have your bag ready to box, now you just have to start training
